If the 2 HDD are connected to same PC then only copy one drive on to the other.

I used many times to copy my data files and computing programs from the main HDD to an external one or some parts to a stick.

Step 1: Turn off computer.

Step 2: Install second (new) hard drive in to spare hard drive computer slot.

Step 3: Turn on computer.

Step 4: Format second (new) hard drive.

Step 5: Either install and open a copy of Symantec Ghost or Norton Ghost (or similar) hard drive backup and imaging program and create an image of the old hard drive on the new hard drive.

OR

Step 5: open windows explorer and copy files from old hard drive to new hard drive. This may or may not work (I have never tried to copy the operating system and programs).

Direct hard drive to hard drive copy using the computer's data bus is the fastest way.

Usual disclaimers regarding creating a copy of pirated or illegal software, movies, etc, etc.

If you have a desktop, you can just open it up and plug in the second HDD, then transfer data directly from one drive to the other (simplest solution). Another idea is to use cloud storage like Dropbox. The downside with this idea is that you only get 2-4 GB of storage space for free, so it might take a long while.

My suggestion (if you're uneasy opening your computer up and fiddling with the SATA cables) is to purchase a TB external hard drive. They're rather cheap (and will be cheaper on the 23rd for Black Friday) and can be of use even after your HDD transfer. It never hurts to have everything backed up somewhere safe!

Back up the old drive onto the new drive. You should have made sure that you knew how to transfer the data before you purchased the hard drive.

Without knowing a lot more about your PC and operating system no one is going to take the time to hand hold you through the operation.

Have you spoken the the maker of the hard drive that you bought in haste???

(Rhetorical question, since we know the answer already)

I just purchased and used PCMover Pro (by Laplink Software) to migrate my over 1.5 TB of software and files from my old PC HD to a newly built PC. It cost about $100 USD and can be downloaded directly from the software developer. You can even pick and choose what will be migrated, if you want. Perform a Google search to find the website.....

It was a very smooth operation and took very little time.

I highly recommend this software! Word of warning: purchase a USB 3.0 male/male patch cord for faster transmission rates!!!!! I can't stress that enough.

USB 3.0 makes a world of difference, but it won't matter much if his current desktop / laptop doesn't have the ports to support it

Maybe with this PC, but the next will probably have 3.0, so it is good advice and should be taken. The difference in price is not that much.....

A USB 3.0 PCI card is only USD$30.

I have used Acronis also and "cloned" the original to the new drive. The process is done by "imaging" the original and re-creating the image on the new drive. Best to connect the new drive internally as an additional drive to your computer. Otherwise, with USB cables it will take longer.

For very little money, I have purchased a "kit" to make a hard drive connect to a PC as if it were a USB flash drive. I have used it numerous times with my equipment as I upgrade computers.

With the new hard drive installed in the computer, the old hard drive can be connected like a flashdrive and copy data files as needed. Programs would be problematic since they were not installed on the new drive.

Bought mine at Fry's years ago....
