Generally yes, IF you do high speed driving with high performance motors. However for most normal vehicles the gain is so small to be mostly not noticed.

Usually it is more for the driver's percieved benefit. It sounds fast so there for it must be.

Yes, if the engine can handle the configuration.

Keep in mind that scavenging is directly affected by the amount of resistance (back-pressure) in an exhaust system. Some engines need this in order to operate at peak efficiency (including power production).

Just opening up the exhaust is not the path to high performance and better mileage, regardless of what boy-racers think.
