New vs. Used Machinery

11/19/2012 8:42 AM

When buying or specifying production equipment, what types of machines offer a better value to buy used? What types are a better overall value to buy new? What has your experience and research shown?

Are there any good resources or websites to help make this choice for specific machines? The term "machine" is intentionally open-ended. I'm referring to anything for production: cutting, forming, processing, assembly, and so on.

This question is FAR TOO BROAD for a response.

Buy new, unless the economics of a used machine suggest otherwise.

Talk to a used machine dealer.

Hire a buying agent.

Machinery with low operating hours and that has been maintained properly is often a good value.

Are there any good resources or websites to help make this choice for specific machines?

Yes.

The term "machine" is intentionally open-ended. I'm referring to anything for production: cutting, forming, processing, assembly, and so on.

And you should expect equally open-ended, non-specific responses.

First, you do some research.

When ever I buy used equipment, even with research, there is that feeling of risk, especially when I find what seems like a very good fit to my needs, but from a vendor I never did business before.

But by doing my research, this counters and helps reduce, but not eliminate that risk.

As far as websites, google you needs. And after establish some used equipment suppliers, then research not only the equipment, but the suppliers also.

That's a nice start, but doing ones homework is the most important with what mentioned as to your needs.

Why someone hasn't given this, and you, a GA is strange.

This is an excellent answer to the general question posed by the OP.

Welcome.

OK PEOPLE, LET'S HAVE ANOTHER GA or two here.
