Power Consumption for Starter and Drives

11/23/2012 4:20 AM

Can we control the power consumption for the motor by using

starter instead of drives?

The best way to control power consumption is to switch things off when not needed.

No I am asking for automatic control.

A motor will only consume whatever power the load needs, it being the product of angular velocity and torque, divided by the overall efficiency of the motor and any outboard mechanical drive. In that sense, it is automatic.

When we are using a VFD, there is no starting current. With VFD, we are controlling power consumption at start. In the steady-state, if we are using VFD at speed less than rated speed, there is energy saving depending on type of the load. The saving is directly proportional to either reduction in speed or square of reduction in speed or cube of reduction in speed. Using 'starter instead of drive' means losing control over power consumption!

In one sense, yes! By switching off the motor thro the starter.

But, a starter can never replace a drive.

As PWSlack so aptly put it, the energy consumption of a motor is always "automatic" in that the the motor only uses what the load demands, plus any efficiency losses. That is true with or without a drive on it.

Contrary to popular belief, the only way a drive saves energy is by eliminating some OTHER forms of losses in a VARIABLE process system; for example eliminating losses across a throttling valve in a variable flow pump system or air guide vanes in a variable air volume system. If the system is not variable, the drive will actually consume MORE energy than if the motor were run DOL and the losses in the process were dealt with elsewhere. So if you have that SPECIFIC situation, then replacing a drive with a starter might actually reduce losses. But in that case, someone had misapplied the drive. It happens, but before jumping tp that conclusion you must thoroughly investigate ALL possible operating conditions to see if there is something the original designer was counting on the drive to deal with.

Not significantly.
