Shoe Bottom Temperature

Dear All,

I have a steel pipe that is insulated and held at a constant temperature of 4 20 deg c. Attached to it is a pipe shoe. The pipe shoe is a piece of structural steel welded to the pipe. I would like to know how to calculate the approximate temperature at the bottom of the shoe. The ambient air temperature is 20 deg c.

Which formula can i use calculating Bottom temp on shoe.

The bottom shoe is surely not suspended in air. Will you indicate, the place of it's placement & the thermal conductivity of the shoe resting place/material? Is there any heat conducting paste between them?

i will elaborate more just i want to caluculate the bottom shoe temperature

i have found some of the calculations but i am not able to find exact abbrivations of this

TL= Te(To-Te) e ^-ml

Te- outside temp ,TL- Temp of bottom, T0- Temp of pipe

e- 2.718 (always)- i dont know what is this value

p= 2(l+t)

s= lx t

hE= 10 KACL/H M2 C (Always)

y= 40 kcal/h m2 c deg (for low carbon steel)

m= squrt he x p/ y x s

i am not able to see any formula in heat and mass transfer.Please explain what is the abbrivations and where this caluclations applicable.

It is an equation for the cooling of a structure which has a source at one end and lateral area in contact with an air flow. There are some errors in your list. hE is the convection coefficient to air. y is the conduction coef of steel and is in kcal/hm°C and NOT /hm²°C. This is a basic formula and you can interpretate if as follows: heat goes through the steel section area from pipe to shoe bottom, the lateral area of the structure being in contact with cool air part of the heat is transfered to the air. p is the perimeter of the section which has a transverse area s=lxt with l being the long side of the section and t the thickness. e is a special nuber whose definition is not interesting for you and called as the bese of the neperian log.

I hope now you will better understand what the formula is and what it means.

It depends on how fast the wind blows, among a host of other variables that will be hard to account for.

I agree with you that hE is in fact NOT constant but for the WORSE case i.e. with very low wind or without wind the value (considered for free convection) leads to the HIGHEST bottom temperature and this what is required for the choice of the stuff under the shoe. In case of a too high temperature it is possible to build some rips to increase the convection area even if from the structural resistance they are not needed.
