Fastest Ball Valve

12/02/2012 6:16 AM

For a ball valve for control application,

1. Which actuator type is fastest to operate (pneumatic cylinder/diaphragm, electric motor)?

2. What is minimum time required to fully open from close position for 6" or 8" ball valve?

Thanks in advance.

it might help if you stated your application as well as the material flow you're working with

Normally, it is better to have a Slow Operation of Ball valve which is used for Control Application(for fine tuning the flow of fluid).

1. Compartively, Pneumatic Cylinder will Operate fastly but the Open/close Operation depends on the Location of the Equipment ,Type of Application , nature of load , Fluid used e.t.c for which this Pneumatic Cylinder can withstand or not ?

If the Load on the Ball valve is high (Fluid Pressure is high) it is better to use Electric Motor with Brake Unit arrangement controlled by PLC.

2. Time Required for Opening depends on the type of actuator what we provided . Even we can Operate the Valve within 1-2 sec

GA Nitin & congratulation for your first GA.

"Time Required for Opening depends on the type of actuator what we provided . Even we can Operate the Valve within 1-2 sec"

can you answer more specifically, for 6" or 8" ball valve, with which actuator, minimum time required will be how much?

Why on Earth do you want a fast operating ball valve? You should use a slow-closing operator instead.....

You're setting yourself up for "Hydrodynamic Shock" (aka "Water Hammer"), hence you could possibly damage your pipes, valves, flow meters, and pumps.

Be careful what you wish for!

It is MY wish CaptMousie. I missed to tell about fluid, it's dry air. No flow meters, no pumps to get damaged, only valves and piping. I will be a good information if you could tell at what speed of valve operation, valves and piping will get damaged?

without any other information, it reads like you are building a pumpkin cannon. in this application, air is the way to go operating a butterfly valve. actually, i think a butterfly valve would be the only thing i would use as a fast acting valve.

A ball valve might just be the wrong tool for the job.

<...6" or 8"...> Sheesh.
