Chimney Height Calculation

I came across the following equation to calculate the height of the chimney based on Sulphur di oxide concentration. H = 14Q^0.3, where Q is the mass percentage of Sulphur Di oxide in flue gas. Anybody knows how this equation was derived?

It's a bit difficult without knowing the units of H.

It's probably done from site-based measurements across various chimneys. However, there is a problem. What if the mass percentage of sulphur dioxide were zero?

The Unit of H is in metres.

Hmm, so if this formula is to be believed, no chimney is ever more than 14 meters high?

I think you may be higher than that.

About 55.73 meters if the concentration is 100%. (?)

One would think that this formula is applicable in only a very few places. Things like prevailing winds, vertical temperature gradient(s), total volume and velocity of stack output, delta T between the output material and the ambient air, and many other factors will affect the concentration of sulfur dioxide at the ground...assuming that this is the reason for making the calculation in the first place.

f(Q)=14Q^0.3

F(1)=14*1^0.3=14

How are you arriving at 55.73?

Sulphur Dioxide is heaver then air. They most likely used dissipation rates as it falls to reach a non hazardous level. Most of which came from the burning of coal. Coal from different sources would have different levels of Sulphur.

I remember a time I had delved into this topic...

The height of a chimney should be based on local weather phenomena, the Met department keeps a record of the height of the inversion layer. Now, every place has a different inversion layer height (for eg, close to the sea/ uphill etc). The height of the chimney should be decided keeping all possible Plume behavior like coning etc in mind.

Perhaps, that's how this equation came?
