Instrument Loop Diagram

12/04/2012 10:25 PM

Dear All,

While preparing Instrument Loop Diagram , do we need to show the wiring part from sensor to transmitter ( eg remote mounted vortex /corilis flow meter, gas detectors withsensors ),

or

from transmitter to DCS System wiring is sufficient .

Regards

Jose

I find it useful to make a simplified drawing and bring it to several individuals unfamiliar with your project in a casual meeting. Ask them one at a time what does this mean? If they tell you what you intend you're done. If they do not understand, now tell them what you meant to convey and sketch in a few details to add what is missing. Make a clean new diagram and bring this to a different group and repeat. Making a simple yet complete diagram is one of the arts of good engineering.

If the sensor and transmitter are physically separated items, a connection (perhaps a dotted line) should be shown. If they are combined into a single unit, then only the cable from the transmitter to the receiving unit needs to be shown.

That was a default description; you may need to conform to other drawing standards.

Consider the poor ba$tard trying to clear a fault at 11:30pm on a rainy Sunday night in November. Does the drawing contain all the information needed to chase the problem through, or only part of it <rhetorical question - NNTR>?

On the loop diagrams I draw, I show it if I had to connect it - if the manufacturer connected it (transmitter on the sensor body) chances are no-one is going to get into that for trouble shooting, and you aren't really sure of the actual wiring anyway, so I don't show it. One exception is an integral RTD and temperature transmitter where you can see the wiring and someone may have to replace the RTD someday - then I show that on my loops. This is just my preferences and not an industry standard, but I haven't had any complaints in 20 years.

I beleive that if you wired from the sensor terminal strip to transmitter terminals, show it in the loop diagram.

The only time you may not show these in loop diagram would be if the vendor supplied a multiconductor cable with multi pin connector at both ends and you just plugged it in.(just show dotted line ETC)

The function of a loop diagram is to be used in troubleshooting a particular loop, therefore any and all elements which require wiring, pneumatic connections, etc., need to be shown.

It is entirely dependent on who the intended reader is and what the purpose of the drawing is.

You may need to create more than one drawing.
