I'd loosen the screws that aren't touching the floor now, until the chair is straight.

Or tighten the ones that are touching the floor now, until chair is straight.

This assumes that the threads are right hand.

GA from me. When in doubt, use a hammer. If that doesn't work, get a bigger hammer.

"...one was sorta loose the guy i got the chair from told me to tighten..."

Oldest trick in the book. Why didn't he tighten them for you? Because he knows the screws are incorrect replacements, or the threads are stripped, or...

Your original question, Which screws to tighten: Why not tighten them all?

Don't tighten them up too much. If one of them strips or breaks, back it off at least a quarter of a turn.

We would need to know what the screws look like to be able to tell you what tool to use. Could be a slotted, phillips, allen, torx, bolt. Not enough info to go on.

Everyone (else) forgets Robertson! Their loss! The costs in diminished productivity date from the moment when Robertson and Ford failed to make their contract- and supposedly Henry Ford held a grudge. It has got to be in the gazillions of dollars todate.

The metric system, Trailer Park Boys, the Canadian dollar at par [or better] and Robertson screws. We rock!

Re: Tighten Screws on Barber Chair

um...I`m kind of pre-metric especially in some of the implementations. trailer park boys....hmmmm.... too many of my neighbours REALLY DO ACT LIKE THAT....Cdn$ at par ---hey --- I was there that day 4 years ago when 6% of Canadians went shopping in the states..all at once... Cdn$ 10 percent over USD... bought a nice sailboat. met a guy from home giggling in the parking lot of a motel in Augusta, ME beside his trailerload of ATV thingies. He was a fit for trailer park boys!!!

It kind of gives one of those warm fuzzies all over. Yup, that`s us!

But the screw drive is an engineering achievement! And one that has long gone under-utilized. It addressed the same issues that Phillips confronted in the sixties and that GM finally addressed somewhat later when robotics could NOT deal with those friggin` slot-headed screws.

The official history is pretty bland:http://www.robertsonscrew.com/history.html

The popular story is that Henry Ford would not accept anything less than patent rights, and that PJ Robertson declined. Ford supposedly said that he would make it his mission to see that Robertson was shut out of the USA. Which, coincidentally, was apparently what happened as far as sales were concerned. The company is today owned by Berkshire-Hatheway, according to the company website, which, if I understand correctly, is based in Omaha, Nebraska - so I guess Henry Ford was trumped by Warren Buffet.

You just asked us: "How high is up?"

There can be no reasonable answer until you at least tell which make/model of barber chair.

Koken or

Koch or

E.Berninghaus or ??

A name and model # would really help here.

Or, just pop over to Antique Barber Chairs Forum. They may know better than we.

You can still come back and play here.

It might be hydraulically operated, and require a twist of the handle and pumping the proper lever....but the're all different, and there are many brands that have many models each....some research should yield results....pictures are always appreciated...

I think you ought to buy a book that will help you to get that chair level. Maybe one like this:

Don't barber chairs have a foot pedal to raise them and a control to lower them and other hand adjustable devices to tilt them? Are you sure it is a barber chair?
