Water as the suppression agent? Will there be a lot of wood or paper ablaze?

An automatic carbon dioxide fire suppression system is the best solution for this application.

The system should use thermal (heat) detectors for actuation in the automatic mode.

The system should use an "initial" discharge to attain a 34% concentration, and also have an "extended" discharge to maintain a 30% or higher concentration for 20 minutes.

Before initial carbon dioxide discharge adequate measures need to be taken for timely evacuation of the working people. For this purpose a time based audio(hooter) and visual (flashing light) warning system should be provided. This is an essential requirement as carbon dioxide flooding in working area will cause suffocation and may become fatal.

Ahah - got it! The one that shuts down the equipment safely before the fire starts.

How about a hermetically sealed facility flooded with Nitrogen gas. No Oxygen No Fire. Not to mention the lower fiscal cost of no staff.

Good thinking.

The best system is one which doesn't have process materials containment problems and whose electrical overcurrent protection arrangements are top-notch. It's beginning to sound like Inherent Safety in design coupled with a Preventative Maintenance regime, like a well-run facility.

Good points, however, perfection in design and maintenance is something I have never seen.

Catastrophic bearing failure, motor overheat, fuel line failure, to name a few, are hard to predict.

The likelihood of the equipment running without an observer present makes the automatic system a reasonable expense. IMHO

I disagree on the bearing failure. One of the first uses of FFT analysis was testing of bearing integrity in high volume printing presses like newspapers. An FFT analysis of mechanical vibrations picked up by a contact microphone allowed failing bearings to be noticed before the press fully failed.

I guess they have had some advances in that technology.

In the early 80's we put large CO2 systems on printing presses in Richmond, VA. They were printing the packaging for Phillip Morris for cigarette cartons.

They regularly had fires on those presses due to bearings.
