Joining Glass with Invisible Adhesion Point

12/19/2012 10:59 PM

I have seen designer items of 4-6 mm thick glass joined,e.g. photo frames that have two vertical rectangular glasses fitted over a glass base. These are pasted and the adhesion point has nothing different than glass(AFAIK), at least it looks like that.

My Q is

How do they join so that there is no glue/whatever that is spoiling the looks.

I think he wanted the personal touch in your answer. You failed him but you gave him an answer.

Oh well. Whatever!

On just about every car windshield a little metal bracket is adhered to it which holds the rear view mirror. The adhesive if applied right you would never know its there.

Yeah, either that or clear epoxy, hardens like a rock.

'...hardens like a rock....'

.

?

Are you referring to solidification of igneous rocks, or some sort of metamorphic process?

It was more a metaphoric expression, I meant the toughness of cured epoxy. Now changing the subject, I want to thank you for the links to two free software packages that you posted in a thread about variac dials.

I found Sketchup 8 the most useful, enjoyable and easy to use draft software that I've ever tried for free, I did'nt even have to read a tutorial ! I wander what the commercial versions from that publisher can do.

Thanks !!

Yeah, Sketchup is great. very intuitive. a bit addictive. I highly recommend checking out some of the tutorials. As you noted it is simple use effectively without instruction, so it doesn't really drive you to watch the tutorials, but you'll be glad you did. There are some amazingly powerful to ools built in that make it incredible... . Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed my suggestion. Thank you for lettingme know.

UV-curing adhesive (or light-curing adhesive) is particularly useful as glass adhesive due to its high transparency and exceptional stability, even in difficult environmental conditions such as humidity and sunlight. It is also used for bonding glass to metal as well as glass to glass. Cure on demand, very rapid cure, one part system and forms an invisible bond.

You lay out strips of glass on tray then put in glass oven, then glass melts together it then comes out one piece.

Then you have to aneal it and make sure you have no sag, not a good option and impossible with laminate or toughened glass

I can believe these messages, the only way to do it is put the glass in a kill and melt it, and the cheepest way. go to a craft shop thay will show you how it done. this is nothing new. I have made stained glass windows, and I got a glass cuting band saw, I can cut any shape in glass, can put lead strips between the glass, or put different color glass together and melt it together. a no brainer!!

Japan has one of the largest aquariums in the world. It contains whales, if that helps to give an impression of the scale (if not, the lack of taste). The glass, understandably, had to be something extraordinary. It's all on one of those Discovery Channel shows. I'm not going to research this one for you, but as you can imagine it needed lots (bulkwise) of laminated glass, and with great visual properties. UV activated glue is the smallscale solution, but your question would be more interesting if you detailed attempts made and problems found. The failed attempts are every bit as important in the help request.

Nah, they had this stuff on Star Trek movie in the ninties...."transparent aluminum". You mean to tell me you still don't have the formula for this?

Kudos to the Japanese for doing their part, so that when the giant space probe comes looking for whale songs, the Star Trek guys will have a place to look for whales.

Couldn't resist a little name inspired quip. Bit naughty of me, but we've had a recent plethora of Jimmy Stewart classics on TV (I've no idea why). Flight of the Phoenix, It's a Wonderful Life etc etc. I'm eagerly awaiting that one where he's an aircraft designer, but I can't recall the title - it's something to do with him realizing about metal fatigue in aircraft, then spending an age to convince the 'boffins' after he crashes the landing gear to avoid an accident. Nothing naughty meant by it, James, sorry if it sounded a bit wrong.

Kris.

I saw an ad this morning in Machine Design for optically clear adhesive. But didn't read any farther than that.

The critical factor that his not been mentioned so far, is that the bonding agent have an index of refraction close or equal to glass. Any difference will create internal reflection of light passing through the joint, making the bond line stand out.

You are so right there is no bond or glue that can't be seen, the only way is like I said you have to melt it together. ( self rating A-1 ) PS Check it out at any craft shop!!

It's outside this thread, but you can do some funky things with baby oil and glass. The refatactive index is close enough to perform some strange optical effects. Alas, no link to hand, but I had a good few minutes scoping that out on google yesterday.

The OP might find some answers if searching for how the worlds biggest aquarium was made. The glass was not 'fused' into sheets. I was watching this a year ot two back, so again () I don't have a link to hand.

One possibility comes to mind - contacting people who restore old and broken glass The antiques market). Even a decent museum that does restoration may be willing to give some tips.
