RF PLC communications

05/24/2007 9:39 AM

I have been asked to implement an andon system on our factory floor. I don't want to hard wire the whole system and wondered if anyone could suggest a suitable rf interface for the plc signals from each machine.

Obviously needs to be addressable and have an operating distance of around 2km

Thanks

Al

Nuffin' to do wiv me mate...but I wouldn't touch a wireless system with a barge pole.

Installed a wireless router at home...to cut a long story short:- As soon as I turned off the wireless section and put in a wired link, my broadband speed came back up and no more dropouts... (I couldnt download anything bigger tham a couple of meg on the wireless link.)

I know some are ok, but I have heard so many tales of woe.

Sorry to burst the bubble, but IEEE came up the 802.11 n standard in 2004 which will uses multiplexing different channels to bring WIFI up to the wire broadband rates. It should be soon implemented.

I would check with Mitsubishi Electronics. They have a low of new technologies available for PLC's. I have a couple of machines with their electronics on them and I can hook up a modem to it to be able to have technicians "talk" to the machines. I believe they have a wireless lan available as well. I'm not sure how many, (if any) other brands it will communicate with but other manufacturers wil have similar devices.

If you can get a wired lan connection you can always install a wireless router at the machines location to create the wireless link.

Thanks for that but I was looking for something that isn't tied to one particular type of plc. Have 10 machines and its pretty much a 50/50 split between Mitsi's and AB.

Im sure it wouldn't be a major project to design it myself but lack of time means I need to get something off the shelf

Hi Al,

Phoenix Contact have some good products but a little on the pricey side though but take a look at this page.

As for displays, you might want to take a look at our website:

Cheers
