Lap Top Computer Does Not Start in Morning

01/11/2013 6:09 PM

I have Dell studio 1555 lap top. I came to USA for some time. We had to go out for about a week. I left lap top powered on (lid closed). After return I found that on opening the lid and pressing power button, it was not booting. Each time a pressed power button, screen flashed and went off. The battery was found fully charged.

I left it on a table and retried around 10 am. This time it started normally. It was left in the night with lid closed and power cord connected. In morning again the phenomenon repeated. It did not boot, screen flashed. Around 10-11 am it started. I have tried various combinations like shut down, sleep mode, hibernation etc every time the same phenomenon repeated. Next time I took the battery out connected power cord, power management changed to "never switch off" and kept the lid open and left over night. This time lap top was found working normal way.

I suspected that some moisture might have got in. So opened the outer cover and blew some hot air. But the phenomenon is same. In morning it does not start, screen flashes and around 10-11 am it starts.

It seems that moisture some how got in at some location and not coming out. In the night time it condenses and makes some circuit short which does not allow computer to start. By the time it is 11 am, due to higher temperature and some heating (sun light falling on it), moisture may be evaporating (still remaining in side) and again condensing in the night time.

Kindly let me know whether my assumption is right and what can be done to over come the problem

I would go through a general procedure to see if you can shake it out....First run virus scan, then update windows manually, then run maint, defrag, tune-up, update registry...What virus protection are you using?

Maybe it needs some Java to get going in the morning, like I do.

I suspect that it's a poor connection not so much moisture. Change in the heat of the time of day causing some expansion at the contacts. Check all the contact points of the battery. Since it will start up with power cord.

Did you disable Java on it?

It's a heat issue. Eveytime you leave it open overnight, it works properly. Everytime you leave the lid closed, it fails.

Moisture would most likely kill the thing (permanently) fairly quickly. A localized "hot spot" from the lid being closed will eventually kill the pc.

It's not your wife/girlfriend leave the lid up.

P.S. Backup any data that is important, NOW. Regardless of the cause, when a PC starts showing such issues, it's most likely going to get worse, virtually always at the worst time.

Where I live the 100 year old house is dusty all the time. I close my laptop lids and have a similar problem occasionally. I (1) turn them off, or (2) use a 'laptop cooler', basically a little tray that sets your laptop up a little higher and has a fan, it plugs into the USB on my laptop. .. Both solutions work well. ... or leave the lid up. Have your display 'sleep' if there is no activity for an hour helps a little on power too (it just turns off the backlight for the most part).

Or when it's cold some trace on the board or in a chip is breaking due to thermal contraction. When temp goes up a bit the cracked trace comes back together. I had this problem once years ago. Dell could never duplicate the problem because they always turned the machine on in their nice warm facility!

I also have Dell Inspiron model, it some times goes weird. It jumps the page or goes back to previous page. I dont leave in on, I switch it off when not in use. I keep it in the lap top bag so it is free from dust.Otherwise it works o.k.

Dell has a great set of diagnostics that examine every part of the computer. Do you have it installed? If so, run it and see if it comes up with any issues. If you do not have it you can check their website and download it, should be free.

Anyone leaving a laptop running with the lid closed is asking for heat problems in 90% of most laptops, even expensive ones.

Also, leaving the battery in all the time will eventually finish it off and produce need to buy a new one. Great for the battery manufacturers as good reliable original (don't use anything else!) batteries usually cost often over $100 each.....

Take the battery out when running on mains except when you need to charge it for off mains usage.

Never overcharge, watch the (software) battery charge level meter onscreen....

Batteries have a finite number of correct (no over charging) charges. Even a few seconds of mains constitutes a charge.

Many chargers just charge and charge as they are also the power supply for the laptop with power when plugged in, this effectively always over charges the battery. Cutting the number of possible re-charges dramatically.....

The manufacturers have no interest in making a proper job of the design of the charger......it produces extra cash when new batteries are sold....

I personally don't think it's a moisture problem. More likely than not it's just a software issue, and the first time you try to wake it in the morning, it fails. After you leave it alone for a while and then try again, it has had enough time to come out of some kind of a deep sleep. Check with Dell for all the latest drivers and bios updates. Some people have reported that this is a graphics driver problem, and un-installing and then re-installing the driver could fix it. Other things that could possible effect it is plugged-in accessories like external hard drives, printers, scanners, etc. If you have anything like that plugged in, unplug them before you put the laptop to sleep. See if that helps.

I had a similar problem but it has nothing to do with humidity. The reason it started when you took the battery out is that the the system has reset itself. With the battery out it will start, with the battery in it recognizes that there is power but can't tap into it. (I also have a Dell.) The system needs to be "retrained". This is a known Dell issue, and if you go to their website you can get the instructions on how to correctly train it again. In the meantime, if you power off just pop out the batter and use the cord only to power back on.

I also have a Dell and have had the same problem and what I did to solve the problem is, in the control panel, select the "Power Options" then select the "Hibernate" tab and disable Hibernation. That will keep it from going into those deep long sleeps that they will not wake up from. And as other's said always back up your system, to something like an External drive. Good Luck

Thanks to all respondents for their views and suggestions. I am trying various alternatives and would come back once problem is resolved. I have taken back-up on portable hard drive.

My son has had similar problems with a Dell laptop, and I have found online that it is a somewhat common problem for the inverter for the LCD display to have problems. My son's has been back to Dell 3 times to have the inverter replaced. Each time it comes back and works fine for a while, then some months later the problem resurfaces. It appears to me to be a poorly designed circuit / component.

His solution has been similar to yours: don't leave it in the condition that brings up the problem. Inconvenient - Yes! Impossible to live with - no. We are planning on replacing the laptop soon, but other than this issue it has worked pretty well for him.

You must have solution to your problem by now. I am surprised, you did know the answerer to this question. Your name is Chatur which means Claver. I am claverer than you. Let me give my solution in a humerus way. I apologise in advance if my hummer hurts you and is not enjoyable to you. I am a Welder and I often have a problem that my pipelayer does not starts in the morning when it is too cold. What I do is to lit a fire and put it under the Cat Engine. Believe me 'starter switch' does allow more than a minute to be pressed and boom it starts. You do the same thing.
