Transport of alcohol (ethanol)

05/25/2007 8:26 AM

Dear Sirs,

I'm starting to design a small barge to carry ethanol. At this point, I'm collecting all the possible information I can get to check if this transport is avaliable. Besides the safety (we have good stuff about that) I'm very concerned about the boundary conditions to carry it such as temperature, pressure and others that can avoid loss of ethanol through evaporation. Does anybody have experienced this type of transport?

Thanks in advance,

high purity ethanol is quite corrosive. So look up possible problem metals and design around the problem. Lots of non trapping baffles to avoid high energy sloshing

I recommend to use the following codes & its codes related:

1. ASME BPVC, Sec. VIII, Div. 1 for design, fabrication & inspection of Ethanol containing vessel.

2. ASME B31.3 for design, fabrication & inspection of interconnecting piping systems.

3. NACE, Corrosion Data Survey, Metal Section Handbook for proper selecting the piping & vessel material.

I'd go to Google et al and find the major producers of ethanol, and contact their engineering and transport divisions. The main thing you have to be concerned about is regulations and taxation, if the alcohol isn't denatured. I recall many years ago, when a major chemical co. stared up an ethanol plant, and they rinsed all the equipment and lines with high quality ethanol, then, partly because of regulations, they tankered the wash ethanol down to a river and disposed of it that way. They said for months afterward, fish congregated near where the alcohol had been dumped!

Here in the southeastern US we used to transport ethanol in the trunk (boot for the Brits) of our cars. We used glass mason jars. I don't recall anyone using a barge though.

our proof[percent] of of the shine was a bit lower than more like 50-55 % alcohol 100 - 110 proof /

we supect the level of alcohol you'll wish to transport closer to the 95 % level / alcohols boiling point is 78.4 c flash point is 17 c

[wikipedia ]

the only way we would handle that stuuf is below --115 c degrees /
frozen

Very important point. If it's not denatured ethanol, then make sure your cabin crew can't gain access to drink it.

If you are planning on transporting it in metal containers make sure to consider the static electricity build up. You should be able to avoid this by grounding the metal container.

...or introducing small amounts of conductive species. Like Tonic Water (hic!).

Note that in thew UK alcohol is already available that has substances in in that make it inconsumable. Methanol in ethanol, with a purple dye and some Pyridine in it, so as to make the drunks throw up, is called Methylated_spirit, and can be had over-the-counter at most hardware outlets, usually in 500ml plastic bottles.
