Unveiling the proposed route and locations of new stations north of Birmingham to Leeds and Manchester, Government underlined its commitment to investing in the infrastructure Britain needs to compete and succeed in the global economy.

For years other nations and their boards of industry have been terrified that Great Britain would develop high speed rail between Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds. Now they're doing it. This is going to unleash a trade war like the world has never seen!

Will this, then, leave the USA as the only highly developed country without a high speed rail line?

For my money, nothing can beat a trip up the west coast on the Coast Starlight. Coast Starlight - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'd hate to think of speeding through all that magnificent scenery at 120 MPH.

Yeah, but it will never actually run at high speed because some muppet will paint it the wrong colour, or use the wrong steel in the rails, or the wrong size cable in the overhead supply, or the sandwiches will be made out of the wrong bread.
Or maybe the train will be built for lefthanded rails.
Trust me it will be over budget, late and never run at full spec.
Other than that, it will be a great success, and plenty of big company directors and politicians will make a nice proffit. Fares will go up and Joe Public will foot the bill.
Oh yes and doubtless the trains will be built in Germany and the rails in France... which is why they will be no good .

Sounds like our southern border experience where we, The US Govt. spent $1,000,000,000.00 USD to construct just 50 miles of "virtual" fence. Turned out the fence was virtually useless. It just never lived up the the contractor's promises. Did they get paid? Of course!

Let,s see. We've got 1,950 miles of border to close.

Never mind.

Hi Del, Similar things happen here in India. Is it British legacy inherited by us?.

As India has been a self-determining Republic since 26/1/1950, a discussion as to culpability would be abstruse.

I've ridden the 'Bullet Train' (Shinkansen) from Tokyo to Osaka a few times. The train was ok but it didn't go fast enough. Apparently none of the pretty parts of Japan are along this central corridor.

I, too have ridden that line. It was many, many years ago, not long after it was built.

Comfortable, it was fast and I needed to get to Osaka quickly!

Food was good, and it has a good Safety Record.

If we could get that system here it would be magic!

I cannot recall the fare structure - it was too many years ago.

I look forward to bullet trains in the UK.

High speed trains are running in many countries transporting people to work and back daily from distant places instead of overcrowding cities/towns. For sight seeing you can travel by slow trains or tourist bus.
