Minimum Allowable Wall Thickness for Vessel

HI,

I am looking for some guidance on calculating the MAWT for a super duplex vessel. I am using PD5500 and I have found the equation:

e=(pd)/(2f+p)

e= MAWT

p=design pressure

f=nominal design stress

d=outside diameter

I have everything apart from the nominal design stress. Can anyone tell me how I get this for super duplex. The code is ASTM A240 UNS S32750 25% Super Dulex and it is operating at 63 deg C.

Don't forget that for ASME vessels, the allowable stress S is 1/4 of the ultimate tensile stress. For DSS, 116,000/4 = 29,000 psi. Some further limitations may depend on weld design and efficiency, and extent of radiography or other testing.

Thanks guys but I am still a bit lost with this!! Still need to find f. I have been reading up on PD5500 and I have the equations to find f. The values I need to use these equations are:

R(m) - the minimum tensile strength at room temperature

R(e) - the minimum value of specified yield strength at room temperature

R(eT) - the minimum value of R at a temparture T

can anyone help here. I am doing this calculation for the first time so I do not even know the basics yet.

I can only suggest you contact the supplier of the super duplex steel, he should have the figures.

I assume you have the formulas to calculate f when you have Rm etc? I'm looking at the European pressure equipment directive. It has factors which I don't recognise from what I remember about BS5500, but the principle is the same. Unlike BS5500, it doesn't give values for various materials.

Hi,

you can take Para. UG 16 from ASME sec VIII - Div. I guide to you.

minimum required thickness is 6 mm.

the rules which used in CODE PD 5500 is the same rules which used in ASME code and you can compare between the two equations in ASME and PD 5500 which used in thickness calculations to make sure about that.

the different between ASMEE and PD5500 is the factor of safety

in ASME is 4 till 1998 - 3.5 after 1998.

in PD 5500 is 2.35
