That depends on what you know already. If you have no formal training, either by attending school, or by a mentor, there's too much initial information about this needed as any book will expect this basic starting point.

What is it you know right now? This information is taught in a 2 year trade school being common to several trades, electricians, refrigeration, industrial equipment maintenance, etc.

Try an internet search for relay ladder diagrams and relay ladder logic to give you an idea of what is involved in this subject. But realize that anything that you find there is no substitute for a comprehensive course of study in a technical school.

Industrial Control Wiring Guide, by Bob Mercer, published by Newnes, 1995, 140 pages. VERY practical. Covers nitty gritty like connections and routing, hardware, cable markers, earthing and PLC wiring.

Basics of Control Components
, published by Siemens Technical Education Program - STEP, no date or ISBN number, covers basic control circuits using contactors, starters, overloads, relays, with specifics for Siemens gear. 100 pages. Text book

Wiring Manual Automation and Power Distribution
, by Moeller, 546 pages, automation systems, electronic motor starters and drives, command and signalling devices, contactors and relays, motor protection circuit breakers, all about motors, appendices. Obviously aimed at Moeller gear, but a lot of info in one book. I downloaded this one.

Best Practice in Process, Electrical & Instrumentation Drawings and Documentation
, 40 pages, published by IDC Technologies, a training firm. Covers drawing standards, numbering and provides the typical lists and tables of SAMA and ISA symbols.
