Higgs Boson

03/15/2013 5:44 PM

Article in the newspaper this morning--which I read at supper--said they may have found the Higgs Boson. I am not a theoretician, not even close, but it seems to me that the theories I have read are not elegant enough. They are too complicated. The theorists are reaching and trying too hard to find a workable theory. Therefore, they have not found the correct one. Comments please.

Well, a lot of quantum mechanics works, and works quite well. The particle they've found is matching extremely well to the predicted Higgs Boson.

Yet, I agree there is a complexity to QM that makes one think there might be a simpler theory yet to be found.

My favorite theoretician is Roger Penrose. He's had a lot of criticisms of QM over the years. I'm currently reading his book 'Cycles of Time'. A fair amount of it is over my head, but I get just enough (I think) to follow what he's saying. His other books have been excellent.

Follow-up.

In the Penrose book I'm reading now, he makes a comment about charge and mass that got me thinking about the Higgs. None of the massless particles (photon, graviton, neutrino...) have charge; all of the particles with charge have mass.

So, is there a connection between the Higgs and electrical charge? I haven't seen that discussed in any of the articles I've read about the Higgs.

I don't expect any theory that goes beyond the perceivable dimensions and matter properties to look too elegant and straightforward. Hell, we may be looking up for things that are not directly explicable by current human intelligence, even current knowledge demands from most people to take some huge logic shortcuts to "understand". Don't know for instance what arguments you'd use to convince Mickey Mouse that there is a 3rd dimension. S.M.

More interesting, possibly, could be Mickey's explanation of why your third dimension was an illusion....

That reminds me of my all-time favorite Disney cartoon, which I hadn't thought about in years. Surprisingly, the whole cartoon can be seen via YouTube:

<...found the Higgs Boson...>

Thank goodness for that. Now put it away and get on with something useful.

Do you really believe the newsmedia? If you want a discussion, post a viable link with some details.
