MOV vs AOV

03/21/2013 4:24 AM

Hi guys,

I'm from mechanical background and would like to know the difference between MOV and AOV. What are the things that I need to compare (pro and cons)?

Brief service parameters;
Operating pressure: 125barg
Service : Super heated steam
Pipe size : 10"

I really appreciate if anyone could recommended which is to be chosen.

Thanx in advance.

Acronymectomy would be invaluable here. If MOV stands for "[electric] motor-operated valve" and AOV stands for "air [actuator]-operated valve", then the answer is in the question.

Yes, MOV & AOV are as per guessed (thanx).

Your answer is very tricky tho. I was expecting something from the engineering experience.

Tricky be blowed. If air is available, use that as the motive force. If electrickery is available, use that.

Simples. ζ

Experience - I am a controls engineer for a small process skid builder. In 25 years of building we have installed a motorized valve one time. That particular skid was totally customer designed and a bit of a proprietary thing. Upon asking the obvious question, why, I got no response from the customer's engineer. Note there were 15 air operated valves on the same skid, so plant air was not the issue. I can only assume it was for the slower response time.

I personally specified a motorized valve for our in plant use for installation reasons - I did not want to go through purchasing and installing a filter regulator and additional air line plumbing for a solitary valve when a 120VAC outltet was 2 feet from the valve location.

That covers some of the reasons for motorized valve use.

Air is typically faster, which may or may not be the desired objective. If the valve must operate during power failure, an air accumulator is probably easier to provide than electrical storage.

See this thread on differences between air and electric actuators.

There is definitely application for both.

Re: MOV vs AOV

Thanx guys. I appreciate your thoughts.

Actually, i would like to decide whether to use an MOV or an AOV for a shut down block valve on a super heated supply line to a compressor. The OEM recommend that the line shall be isolated within 30mins after the switching off of the compressor. The frequency of this isolation is very low (upon needs or twice a year).

AOV response is very fast (1s/inch) and i don't need that much speed. As for the hammering effect, would that happened if i change the existing manual block valve to an AOV?

For an MOV, in terms of auxiliary accessories that should come with it (eg: cabling), compared to AOV, which one is more in terms of cost/installation/maintenance?

in the mean time, i'll digest the link given. thanx.

If you do not need to control the flow only to open or close the valve then use MOV.

MOV used also for replacing the mechanical hand operated valve where operate do not reach easily or time consuminng like Boiler main steam valve.
