Earth to Neutral Voltage Safe Value

03/25/2013 2:25 AM

Dear friends,

When there is no voltage between earth to neutral the system is said to be healthy.

But what is the allowable/acceptable limit for the voltage between earth and neutral.?

Is there any standards to support the acceptable limit.?

For Human safety concern voltage between neutral to ground should be less than 50 V.

It can be achieved only in the healthy balanced power system.

The voltage in the neutral relative to the earth conductor is a function of the neutral current and the earth loop impedance, as has been indicated in this forum countless times before. For a 3-phase system that is perfectly balanced, the voltage difference will be zero, as there is no neutral current. However, the perfectly-balanced system is a hypothetical concept and rarely if ever achieved in practice.

If the voltage on the neutral conductor is perceived to be high, then increasing the area of the neutral conductor will help. British Standard 7671 gives full protocols for conductor sizing.

Dear Friend,

Upto 2 Volts is VERY GOOD, 2 to 5 Volts is GOOD, 5 to 8 is OK.

Pl. refer ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING PORTAL. The above Values are taken from there.
