FM and AM Circuit Difference

03/25/2013 6:04 AM

Hi everyone.

I have been searching all over the internet. I found the circuits for FM and AM transmitter and found no difference. Can anyone explain how these 2 circuits differ for each other? As both have different way to modulate the signals.

Using a visible light analogy:

  • an AM signal's brightness varies with modulation while the colour stays the same.
  • an FM signal's colour varies with modulation while the brightness stays the same.

so the electronics for the circuits must surely differ in some way?

The block diagrams look the same; Modulator, Oscillator, Final amplifier; the difference lies in the way the audio affects the carrier frequency. For more info check out the ARRL Handbook.
