The only way I know of to get ice on the discharge line(high pressure liquid) is for the unit to be completely frozen up....This is not hard to spot, the entire compressor is usually covered in ice the evaporator coil is a block of ice the lines coming and going are covered with a thick coat of ice.....only seen this a few times

If, on the other hand, you're talking about the suction line(the larger line) then this is much more common....

The most common cause, by far, is low freon charge, usually due to leak....next most common maybe condenser contactor sticking in energized position...any number of causes for this.....next might be evaporator fan failure, due to overheating or more likely fan relay failure....another cause of icing is evaporator coil being clogged or air filter completely clogged.....another more rare would be control voltage failure for any number of reasons....

I think you meant high pressure gas...not liquid. it's liquid after leaving the condenser

the little line is the discharge (hot gas) the larger line (suction) is the one that gets cold. perhaps you meant the larger suction line??

There are only two possible reasons.

Temperature and humidity.

Read a book.

Dear Mr. tushhar611994,

1. Surrounding air may be just saturated, and on account of cooling, water droplets form and further cooling results in formation of ice. If the air is dry enough ice formation will certainly reduce. This is LINKED to RELATIVE HUMIDITY - PSYCHROMETRIC SUBJECT.

2. The Thermo Dynamic reason is the Temp. falls below the DEW POINT - which forms mist/water droplets, and further cooling, changes the water phase to solid ice phase.

For Example, vegetables kept in the refregerator, emanates/evaporates , water vapour from and with in the vegetable, and goes up and surrounds the freezer coil and thus ice is formed.

airflow, low refrigerant charge. t-stat set too low.......especially overnight when the condenser is located outdoors, sticking contactor, air flow, airflow, and airflow.

Add these to the mix:

  • Lack of maintenance
  • Blocked air passage (guano/leaves/dead rodents, etc.)
  • Running the equipment too hard
  • AC unit low on refrigerant
