What is the dryer's original manufacturer's view on this scheme? Have they been brought in to advise? What is it drying - toffee? Talcum powder? Tea leaves?

Hi Slack, the dryer I talked about is a filter dryer in a HVACR system of 20 TR capacity using refrigerant 410a and 7/8 line size.

No problem. Just orient the dryer in the way most convenient for servicing it and the adjacent equipment.

if it's a suction dryer it's only meant to be in a few hours as a tool to clean vapor in the system. after several hours it should be removed.if its a liquid line type it can stay in for years in any position assuming it doest become plugged or contaminated. What is your thinking behind changing it? whats wrong?

I am changing the dryer following low pressure in suction and cold liquid line from dryer to TXV. I want to change position of dryer vertical to eliminate elbows and use long bends in the liquid line and to make line brazing easy.

is the liquid line is fairly warm BEFORE entering the dryer but the drier is actually getting cold you have a clear restriction of that drier and it's acting like a metering device ( also impacting you with a lower back pressure)and needs to be replaced. the elbow are a nice idea but wont really offer an improved flow on your gauges but if it makes soldering easier....sure.

The answer is very simple, consult the manufacturer or Installation Manual, or both!

From reading the entries, I have come to believe that this is a 7/8th liquid line dryer. They are non positional as long as they are installed with the correct refrigerant flow in mind.

You can choose a shell type, take apart dryer that allows you to just change the core elements. The other choices are flare nut connection's, no soldering required, or the solder in type. The last is preferred by those who monitor ozone depletion. An absolute pain when it comes to servicing. As you have to sweat out the old one and sweat in the new one. A N2 purge during soldering is required.

Sporlan, Alco/ Emerson will give yo all the information that you need along with a competent refrigeration mechanic.
