Stainless Steel Crimp Terminals

04/17/2013 6:18 AM

Does anyone out there know where to purchase Stainless Steel Crimp Terminals in the USA for copper wire? I am looking for a size that fits AWG #4 with a 1/4" stud. I have searched Google long and hard with NO LUCK! I picked SS because these terminals will be submerged in DI water for there lifetime.

Wire EDM Machines have Lower Heads that are submerged in a tank filled with DI water. Common Copper and Nickel Plated terminals are attacked and eaten away by the DI water that causes both Electrical and Mechanical Failure. SS will avoid this problem all together.

So, make the earth/ground connection outside the tank.

Do explain all, for there will be others. After all, there's only 75 acronyms to work through.

Pitiful… I thought CR4 was here for serious topics, discussion and help. Obviously with members like PWSlack and Del the cat this is no longer the case. Please go back to slacking off and cleaning your cat box and let serious members continue on.

The lower head is movable. It has linear guides motion on the ones I've seen was done with ball screws. Running current thru them to ground would soon destroy the accuracy. Just as the current on the wire erodes the work piece it would also damage these parts.

If you want the excellent free help and advice which is often forthcoming on this forum, I suggest you pull your neck in a bit before some one gives you a good verbal slapping.
Maybe you should check out the number of posts and GAs (Good answers) of the responders, before shooting from the hip.
I'd also suggest you observe good engineering practice and write out acronyms in full after their first usage.
In summary, don't be a tw*t.

Nah, wasn't an ancronym, just a UK slang expression, the meaning of which should be evident from the posts.
Maybe it's obvious in the US but in the UK these machines are commonly referred to as spark erosion machines rather than EDM.
The OP (original poster) seems unaware that not everyone here is in the US, and interestingly the machines were invented and developed outside the US too.

If the DI water corrodes copper terminals, what keeps it from corroding the copper wire itsslf?

Using the search term "stainless crinp terminals", I got gazillions of Google hits. What search term(s) did you use that returned no hits?

I have found SS terminals like the one in the picture that when sealed around the barrel with silicone and heatshrink will stop the De-Ionized water from attacking the copper wire. BUT they are not made in the USA! I have Googled this and all of the suppliers are not in the USA! I am looking for a small quanty and this is where I am running into problems.

It occurs to me that you could possibly make these on your machine...? If not some SS pipe and washer could be welded, both of which are universally available....
