DC Motor Field Coils Getting Overheated Often

06/19/2013 2:15 AM

Dear Sir

298 kw dc shunt motor Siemens Germany Make field coil getting overheated often.

This is used crane liting containers in Sea Port area.DC motor automatic controller functioning well. The same Controller is used for other motors also where filed coils not getting heated up.The failed motor new field coils are made and after 14 months operation inductance of filed coils found not uniform and got overheated. When same design field coils are used why motor is getting overheated.? Is it Main Field coil pole shoe is not in order.Cooling arrangement is same as other motors which are working well. What could be the reason?

Regards

Sadasivam

Re: DC MOTOR FIELD COILS GETTING OVERHEATED OFTEN

Whatever the intent of posting here, there can be no better recommendation than one of the most frequent responses on CR4 to date: talk to the manufacturer on the telephone and, if necessary, get the manufacturer's Service Technician to make a site visit.

The manufacturer may well have met this problem before and solved it many times. Even if the manufacturer has not found this problem before, it will be interested in investigating and finding a solution in readiness to help another Customer should the need arise, and in preventing recurrence in future product lines.

The chances of a CR4 reader having seen this particular problem, having solved it and having the inclination to respond are rather smaller.

I'm surprised if the motor is purely a shunt motor, compound with inter-poles is more likely.

If there's a measurable difference between the field coils resistance don't you think that may be a clue? The field coils should be balanced no mater what.

Time to pick the phone up.

Do your field coils have multiple connections ? How many poles? Has the polarity of the fields been checked as correct?

This is used crane liting containers in Sea Port area.

Please check the operation of Motor during Lowering the Containers. The DC motors should be unclutched during Lowering of crane, if not the DC motor will work as DC generator and will eventually heat the Field coils.

Please also check if the Dynamic Resistance bank is used to Break the DC motor or the dissipiate the energy generated during lowering operation.

Also check the setting of DC Motor drive for the Field current setting and match the same with Name Plate Data on the DC Motor.

I feel these are the most common reasons for the Field Coils Failure of DC Motor.
