It depends upon the following:

  • The temperature and humidity in which the operative feels comfortable.
  • The volume of the working area.
  • The shape of the working area.
  • The minimum number of air changes per unit time required by local statutes.
  • The length of the duct.
  • The bends in the duct.
  • The temperature and humidity of the incoming air.
  • The heat gain from the processes.
  • The heat gain or loss from the building to the surroundings, which is a function of latitude, longitude, elevation above seal level and local weather patterns.
  • And a host of other things missing from the original post.

The best advice is to consult local heating and ventilating specialists locally, who can attend a site visit, make recommendations and quote to supply sufficient equipment for the business needs. Get at least three quotations from different firms and progress the investment as a health and safety "must do" on the fast track with the justification being operative well-being and the potential loss of the individual to the process putting the line out-of-action.

Consider also maximising the use of insulation materials in and around the hot processes so that there is less heat loss to the operative area. Payback on the investment will be fast and immediate.

Breathing faster will also help you feel ventilated.

Would it be worth considering ducting the hot air out the roof instead of bringing in cooler air to fight it? The hot air has to go somewhere. Just estimating that you would need to reduce the temperature by 20°C to make it bearable. You could also provide large stand fans or "chicken coop" fans to make things bearable for your operators.

You don't want to be standing in a noticeable wind all day....This puts a strain on the worker...a gentle breeze is ok..like a ceiling fan....The air pressure needs to be balanced, that means you need to exhaust at the same rate you supply....The airflow requirement would vary according to outdoor temperature and personal preference...This would mimic the typical system in restaurant kitchens where fresh air is supplied behind the cook and exhausted over the grill....This puts the chef in the air flow stream, but not in direct air path from fan....in this way you can accelerate the air flow without causing discomfort and stress to the worker...I would also have a variable flow system, if practical...
