What's In the Water

07/04/2013 1:47 PM

I suppose you all know that Starbucks "fine-tunes' its water so that it tastes exactly the same as it does at corporate headquarters. This is accomplished by in-store water treatment and an occasional visit from a certified Starbucks "water doctor." They do so in order to be certain about a new drink's taste once it's distributed to the field.

However, what you may not have known is what whistle blower Nathan Walsh is now claiming. Specifically, that Starbucks adds a mild diuretic to their water that winds up in all of their drinks.

The purpose? To get that drink and some of your body's own water out of you and to get you back up to the register as fast as possible.

So the next time you get the feeling that your double latte went right through you, try sampling a glass of their plain water and see if it doesn't have the same effect.

Thanks, Nathon

"It was long thought that caffeinated beverages were diuretics, but studies reviewed last year found that people who consumed drinks with up to 550 milligrams of caffeine produced no more urine than when drinking fluids free of caffeine. Above 575 milligrams, the drug was a diuretic.

So even a Starbucks grande, with 330 milligrams of caffeine, will not send you to a bathroom any sooner than if you drank 16 ounces of pure water. Drinks containing usual doses of caffeine are hydrating and, like water, contribute to the body's daily water needs."

I think the point was that there was an extra diuretic in the water, over and above the caffeine in the coffee.

So if the latte gives you 330 mg*, they'd need to be adding a diuretic equivalent to over 245 mg of caffeine to the water. Vermin: have you got any figures available from Nathan/Nathon???

*Assuming SE's sources are correct

They say they switched to destilled water! Now, I know exactly what is in destilled water! But I didnt even think that was a healthy choice.

Will the coffee add enough to the water not to be dangerous anymore?

This is a one star wonder if I've ever seen one.

I don't go to Starbucks because they are a ripoff. If people are spending their days moving between the counter and the bathroom, they are buying their freaking coffee with food stamps a SNAP card.

I've got some suggestions as to what they can add to their coffee; repeat costumers aren't part of the equation.

I intentionally missused a word. Which one is it, and how does it pertain to this thread?

No way - that little exchange was far too funny. As unelected officer for the unwashed masses, I cannot allow such. It's all been copied for future re=posting .

Starbucks is the coffee place, yes ? We now have one in the nearest town (Folkestone, where it's rumored some people can do joined-up writing), and we also now have a Costa place. The experience is one that I have yet to thrill to. Call me tight, but the jar of instant coffee from the supermarket seems a lot cheaper and it's hellish quicker in the morning. Far be it from me to upset you all amidst post-party stomach, but I am typing this whilst still in my underpants. I don't know if such places are open at this time of day, much less that they would allow me in. Do people go there for the beverages, the wi-fi stuff, or the social atmosphere ?

Kris- Coffee tastes a lot better when it costs a half day's pay.

I think kram covered that one in his last post.

Does this thread even matter ? Yet to see it, but if saw a free coffee I might just risk an urgent desire to run for the washroom bathroom bog. I've yet to see this in the UK (not that I ever venture near Starbucks), but they may yet redeem themselves.

What the hell is this thread about?

Does Starbucks need a bailout?

I drink coffee every morning at home; it helps me go poo-poo and pee-pee before I go to work.

What's the problem?

Re: What's In the Water

This only indicates one thing to me.

The water at Starbucks headquarters is so contaminated that they need to add something to the water at every other place they open just to make it taste as bad. And then they add coffee!

Also is there a difference between distilled water and "destilled" water?

I know what distilled water actually is.

As far as "destilled" water. I once worked at a service station and they sold "destilled" water. Basically he got a 20L drum of tap water that was "still", picked it up and shook it around, and proudly announced "It's now de-stilled".

What would Starbucks do if the municipal water supply to head office was improved?

Don't bother. Cars everywhere and only 3 entrances to the beach. They've blocked off everything.

I particularly like the first week of every month; I feast on organic, gluten free blueberry scones that I purchase with my SNAP card, and text my friends on my free phone, about what a bummer, life is.

Wanna be my BFF?

The Starbucks crowd tends to be a combination of pseudo-intellectual jobless people that dress like yuppies, and freaks.

Back on topic:

I don't believe that getting people to pee more often, would lead them to drink more coffee. It doesn't make sense.
