CO2 Tunnel

Morning all

I have created a CO2 tunnel for our canning production line to try and improve our DO's (disolved oxygen ppb) but am still having high readings. Between 110 and 150.

The tunnel is 300mm x 300mm x 1200mm with a perfirated plate and 3 incomming CO2 feeds of 10mm each of a central regulator set at 1 bar.

Ive tried raising the CO2 preasure but am still getting high DO's. Ive added 2mm holes at the infeed to try and eliminate the incomming O2 vortex but to no avail.

has anybody had a similar installation done and with what results to your DO's.

Not familiar with CO2, but had some experience with N2. What is the DO's reading for your material before entering the tunnel? (ACTUAL tested results).

No matter how good your tunnel is, it will not make up for the original condition.

The other possible source is "air" trapped on the surfaces and inside the containers and lids that ae being assembled. The inlet lines for these might need some smart "purging" process also.

I would not have any perforations other than those necessary for product and equipment movement since every opening is a possible vortex for normal air entry and mixing.

Long time since I've been in that industry, but from memory there is a maximum velocity for molecules moving in a mixed gas. Your CO2 supplier should be able to advise.

Hello Dirk, and welcome to CR4!

This is such a specialized problem...

What is the temperature of the cans as they go into the tunnel?

Do they have time to lose heat before they get to the tunnel?

Are they open to atmo before they get to the tunnel?

If you want to prevent O2 absorption into the can contents, you must introduce your "inert" purge (the tunnel) while the cans are as hot as possible, since the DO is lower at higher temperatures. They must also get to the tunnel with a minimum of time of exposure to open air.

A simple sketch with dimensions would go a long way at being able to help! (you know - "A Picture Paints a Thousand Words" ".
