Simple Building Measurment Device

08/07/2013 10:18 AM

Hi all

I often have situations similar to the showroom where I have to measure between beams and/or outriggers. The roof is about 6m and not accessable.

I want a simple cheap measuring device maybe on pole. Any ideas?

Tony

Thank you, I already have the Bosch measurer, which I can use on a pole, but cannot read or press the buttons 4m away.

Estate Agents use these.

Well you could measure room length and count beams then divide, for approximate measurement....access building plans(should be on file at county building permits).... could mark vertical line to floor from beam centers with laser and measure on floor...

Thanks for the feedback. I can triangulate and use trig, but there has to be a simpler way . The setup time for a 3D measuring device is huge and I can hire one for $125/day. I'd settle for a ruler on a stick .

In most cases I have the original construction plans, unfortunately the dimensions aren't always as stated. The Bosch laser measuring device I have will measure within 2mm, provided that I can hold it steady, see the laser spot and press the button, not easy when you're 4-6m away.

No, I was thinking of getting a laser vertical to center of beam, and making mark on floor, then do it again, and measure between the marks....using something like this ↓

You could use a plumb bob and use your pole to hold the cord at the upper measuring point, mark the point on the ground and measure the 2 ground points.

Or the laser type, from the ground, pointed vertically to your measuring point. Then just measure the points on the ground.

Or, even now, there's an app for that;

Thanks AussieBob I downloaded the app, but the instructions are vague. Tony

We are required to check measure before we install, most times it's right, but if it's wrong we are responsible. Tony

If you are willing to construct your own. Two concentric tubes with a simple linkage at one end. As you slide the inner tube (green) up the outer tube (blue) the linkages will push the measuring bars (yellow) further apart. The green tube would have a scale marked on the bottom end so you know how far into the blue tube you have pushed it. Calibrate the scale so that it directly reads the distance between the measuring bars. Note the scale will be non-linear.

Thank you, that's worth developing with interchangeable arms. Tony

Measure the shadows at noon, or whenever the sun is squarely over the roof. A little math will correct any errors. Get a standard from the beams that are lined up with the windows, that line goes all the way down...
