If the radar beam is pointing vertically downwards, then the reason for the "sticking" may be that it is unable to determine a reflection off an inclined or agitatedly-moving surface. If that is so, then it might be an incorrect measuring tool for this particular job.

  • To what end are the readings being made? What is the process need?
  • Was the application discussed with the equipment vendor in detail before purchase? What was the outcome of that discussion? What alternatives were under consideration at that time?
  • Has the instrument's current behaviour been discussed with the vendor's Technical Helpline? What was the outcome of that discussion? What alternatives are currently under consideration?

The instrument is an RF admittance type, which ought to work for either application. Is the thing under warranty? If so, get 'em in to sort it out. If not, then following the application of advice received directly from the instrument manufacturer and if no joy is to be found, consider replacing the one on the ore bin with either guided radar or weigh cells, and the one on the lime tank with a submerged differential pressure instrument, which will be close enough for all practical purposes.

Readings that are 'stuck' are symptomatic of internal error handling that has been configured to 'Hold', which means that the transmitter holds the last valid reading before the error.

Your task is to get the manual, search for 'error' and find out how to identify the current error and (usually) the list of previous errors to start you out on the path to figuring out what's wrong.

If you're smart, you'll write all that stuff down, because what caused the error could be very different on two different tanks with 2 different materials.

Krohne's typically display the current error in the upper left of the display. The error is buried somewhere in the menu.
