Triangular Flat Plate Antenna

08/11/2013 11:12 AM

I remember seeing in an old radio antenna book, a drawing of a flat plate triangular shaped antenna. It consisted of a solid plate of thin aluminum, with a single hole drilled slightly up from the base. The leads were connected to the hole and one corner,as best I can remember; it has been over 40 years ago, and I have misplaced or lost the book during moves.I do remember that the placement of the hole and leads were critical to the gain.

Does anyone else remember any details about this type of antenna?

Thanks in advance for any and all help on this.

Yes, I am aware of fractal antennas, and they are great, but I was just trying to scratch a curiosity itch. The design I am referring to probably was not very good, or it would be in common usage. Thanks for your input.

I'd call that a ground plane.

Google images shows a lot of different configurations.

You might contact American Radio Relay League:

ARRL - the National Association for Amateur Radio - Newington, CT ...

http://www.arrl.org/

They have many publications on antennas.

Back when CB radios were all the rage, I put my radio on the back patio and, using an antenna matcher, transmitted using the patio umbrella as the antenna. Hey, it was something to do.

Sometimes things defy the standard method of analyses.I found an old TV antenna in the junkyard, all bent up,but all there.I took it home, straightened it out the best I could, which was not very good. Some of the elements were kinked, and could not be restored to the original shape. It looked like it has been though a tornado.

I hooked it up anyway. It was the best TV antenna I have ever owned.A new Channel Master, with more elements did not perform as well, ever with a rotor.

Sadly, I had relegated the old resurrected one back to the recyclers before I realized that the new one was not going to be as good.

Cannot explain the unusually high omnidirectional gain of this "junked antenna",and it would probably frustrate an engineer to try to explain ,it,if I still had it.

Some things "just work".

Lyn-

When the marine bands were in the 2.3mhz range many years ago, I used the wire cable backstay of our sailboat as an antenna. People used to see the radio but could not figure out where we had the antenna. Most other boats had gigantic antennas with a loading coil part way up. Best reception was when you did not hold onto it.

I also have an old car radio in my garage that gets it's best reception when you hold onto the antenna. Sort of tuff to turn a wrench on a car while holding the antenna that's up on a shelf!

Good Luck, Old Salt

Thanks,for your feedback, Solar Eagle.

I had found this is my Google search before posting this question.I thought I had found it, till I looked at the images.I always try to do my research before bothering anyone with a question.

Any and all links are certainly welcome and much appreciated!

AS it was explained to me antenna design is about 1/3 science, 1/3 black magic, and 1/3 pure luck as to which design will work best and where.

A fa as junk yard salvage things go I tend to think of them as being like a cat or dog that was rescued from the pound about 5 minutes before being put down. After that they do their best to serve a purpose for their new owner!

Your statement harkens back to the wisdom of my grandfather,a Cherokee Indian:All things have souls, even rocks. Some are good, and some are bad, like people.

When making tools,he would study the stones in his pile intently, and pick out the ones that wanted to serve as an axe, or hammer,to make things, or a spear point or arrowhead, to kill things. He was a very skilled tool maker.

I am sure it was my imagination that I saw the old antenna elements droop as I took it down for the last time.

Without knowing the dimensions I'll bet it was for receiving UHF tv stations. There were many oddball looking designs meant to sit on top of the tv.

Believe it or not the triangular design is still in use for millimeter wave signals such as WiFi and above. It is easily formed on a printed circuit board, the critical dimension is still where to inject the signal (attach the leads).

Just an example, plenty more on Google.

good link (i dont get the sh*t of this stuff - but it'll be required at certain points) the expansion reveals this http://highfrequencyelectronics.com/Archives/Dec06/HFE1206_Jahoda.pdf
