Zinc Phosphate Coating On Wire Rod

08/12/2013 5:12 AM

Hi Forum,

What is the suggested amount of zinc phosphate coating on a spring steel wire rod for optimum wire drawing and how to measure it ??

What does this thickness depend upon, how does it influence the wire drawing later on,and any other relevant info !!

Thanks.

Please help!!

Yes. It is quickest to put all relevant information in the original post, as it alleviates the need for respondents to play "20 Questions" before worthwhile information is presented in reply.

The suggested amount will be called out in the spec or print as a weight per area, example 500mg per square foot. To measure this we run panels with any part we zinc phosphate and dry and weigh the phosphated panel. We then use use a potassium hydroxide solution that dissolves only the zinc phosphate and not the substrate, dry and weigh panel again. This will give us total weight of zinc phosphate on panel then we us a specific formula for our panel size to calculate coating weight on parts.

Coating weight will be influenced temperature of bath, amount of zinc phosphate in solution, time in solution, cleanliness of parts, TDS in rinse water, etc......

But your chemical supplier can and should tell you all of this, give them a call.
