How Come Different Materials For the Same Process Service

09/06/2013 12:14 AM

in comparison to the orientation above, the material on 3 immediately joined spools are different and are listed in the same sequence as follows:

103CS1P:process (CS:A106 ) rating 300 RT:5% ( downstream of checkvalve)

106SJ1P:process (SS:321) rating 600 RT:100% (upstream of checkvalve)

103CL2P:Process(AS: 5CrMo) rating 300 RT:100%. (downstream of cs line)

here is my question; 1 ,why are 3 different materials selected for the same process service without going through any special units or any addition of some chemicals , 2, if the process service is demanding then why cs (A106) is put right between SS321 and 5CrMo 3, and the operating temp varies way too much eg op temp on SS321(in the middle) is 383'c while it's 80 on the other two.

More significantly, why wasn't the difference picked up dusing the last HazOp Study?

What else did the study overlook?

What was the piping designer's response when the question was asked there?

  • This individual might be the best person to ask. After all, the forum doesn't know what is in the pipe, its temperatures and pressures.

Maybe it's a corrosion comparison test loop.

A galvanic corrosion experiment? Possibly!

Honestly this is a question best brought up within the company and not here.

There will maybe have to be a revision of said drawings and how would the designer know of it when it is presented here.

I hope you raised this problem internally.

All the best
