The last comment in the mentioned link is correct! The PI(D) controllers are in general less optimal for nonlinear systems.

The combination between PI(D) and fuzzy logic controllers where the fuzzy logic changes the PI(D) coefficients depending on different system parameters at the working point are more efficient.

The coefficients are in general established based on a system linearisation which is a compromise and works OK if non-linearity is limited.
