I dont know Indian standard, however this is a standard use in the USA - assuming voltages under 600v.

Not without carrying out an acronymectomy first.

Yes, they can.

Specifically, I have an APC Symmetra installed right alongside my switchgear.

However, code and AHJ may still require an extraction hood. I have one.

Really? I've heard this before, so I guess the AHJs are not accepting that SMF batteries do not vent then? I wonder if they are ASSuming that they are VRLA?

For the acronym haters, SMF = Sealed Maintenance Free, VRLA = Valve Regulated Lead Acid. VRLA batteries vent hydrogen gas in small quantities, SMF do not.

My APC USP units at work haven't gassed out, but I ran an Optima in my Jeep to the point of frustration. It got pretty round and the pressure reliefs were spewing some pretty nasty gasses. So, though not a regular occurrence (like my previous wet lead acid units), the possiblity exists.

Our AHJ is NAVFAC. Rules and regs vary.

That Optima was good for another 15 months before it finally wouldn't hold a charge, btw.
