No particular limitation other than the number of spaces actually in the DB.

And as long as the combined amperage rating of the individual breakers does not exceed the capacity rating of the main breaker.

Not remotely true.

The new panel I put in our house has a 100 amp main and spaces for 24 breakers of which have a combined amp capacity of something like ~300+ amps.

Of course, not for you in BFE.

I'm talking about what sane people do when complying with local codes.

Actually all you need to do is look at any main breaker or fuse panel and do some simple math.

The odds are even the one in your house has a combined amp rating of all of the smaller sub circuits that is way higher than the one primary set is.

Go have a look and let me know what you find.

I would give you the exact quote from my NEC code book as to why it's acceptable but my wife put it someplace I will likely never find again.

Indeed. Diversity factors, demand factors, and nonconcurrent loads may be considered.

I'll stick with my statement, given the obvious lack of knowledge of the OP, knowing it will be ignored, anyway.

My concern is that if you tell someone who doesn't understand the implications, that it's OK to put 150 AMPs worth of breakers in a 50 AMP box, they will assume that the 50 AMP box can carry 150AMP loads.

I'm done here.

Sorry Lyn, but your wrong on this one. Main protects the incoming wiring. Main will trip when load exceeds value of breaker. Does not matter on number of secondary breakers. But, most manufactures limit spaces to a certain number.

This may come into play if the OP's DB has more than 42 spaces in it.

sreeharir.86,

Since the forum can have no idea where you really are:

Consult the local regulatory boards and your insurance underwriter.

you shouldn't be as worried about how many as you should be concerned about how many amps in total can you safely add(think %)

Don't diversity calculations apply in the USA?

BS7671Am1 OSG has quite a large section devoted to it.

Judging by the name of the OP, I doubt that we are talking about the USA.

I concede that my instructions may not apply to residential electrical wiring in the USA.

The breaker is to protect the cable, you can have many sub breakers as you like as long as each cable is protected by a breaker.

The breakers are related to the cable sizes. As no-one here can see the distribution board and the number, type and diversity of the loads and doubt has been posted here, the full answer is "consult a qualified local Electrician".

Make sure the installation is compliant with local wiring codes, or a measure of unpopularity with the facility's fire insurance company is sure to result.

Depends on the segment of the DB u were using, moreover the actual main incomer MCB will be designed of 1.8 times for the total load shared by the DB.

Hi, To Deside the Breaker rating of the Distribution board Incomer, first you calculate your connected loads on the DB with Divercity factor, then only you can find the correct rating of the Incomer.

but dude, is there an 50amps breaker? the breaker comes in the rating of 5A/10A, 16A/20A, 32A, 40A, 63A, 100A and goes on. first check whether there is an 50A breaker!

FWIW, NEC had the 42 switch limit in the 2008 code, its gone from the 2011 code and 2014 code. Its now no problem getting 54 and 60 space panels. But one of the limiting factors is, how many holes do you have room to punch in the panel for conduit.

Read up a little at this link.

Maybe it will jog something loose from your electrical engineering school days.
