DC System Maintenance

10/26/2013 12:08 AM

Why do we conduct these type of measurement during dc system preventantive maintenance????what are the appropriate tools for testing/measuring/scan etc those scenario??

1:DC Power Systems and Rectifiers

- Measure and record system capacity and load

- Calibrate meters

-Thermal scan/infrared analysis

-Measure and record noise level

-Inspect filter capacitors, as applicable

-Ensure proper operation of LVD, if equipped

2:Inverters

-Measure DC and AC voltages and currents

-Measure and record system capacity and load

- Verify alarm set points and operation

-Thermal scan/infrared analysis

-Inspect filter capacitors, as applicable

3:Battery Maintenance
-Visual inspection
- Tightening and torquing of connections
- Measurements and readings of individual cell voltage,
intercell connection resistance, internal cell resistance
- Rehydration of flooded cells
-Removal of dust and dirt

- Calculate estimated reserve time

NB:Some of these seems to be common but i need more detailed verification.

You just don't learn do you?

It's your homework. You should do that work.

here are several questions for you

1. do you know what an inverter looks like?

2. you know how to test for DC & AC voltages?

3. Have you EVER been anywhere near an inverter?

4. and last.. how many marks do I get if I answer ALL you homework questions correctly?

here is a message from my sponsor.. DO YOUR OWN HOMEWORK!!

Finances may limit the instruments available; invest first in a decent AC/DC multimeter and a hydrometer. Take periodic readings of everything possible with these items. This will be educational and will establish baseline performance of your system.

As circumstances permit, add more sophisticated instruments, learning their details as you go.

No3 could do with a few more tasks, rearrangement of order and some "ifs and thens" and some "otherwises"..

Some of the maintenance activities you listed are disruptive and depending on the application should/can only be performed on a system that is not in service.

Why do you need to know? Have you read the system documentation?

Well, that's a good question. The problem with it is the undefined "we".

The relevant "we" is the "we" that writes the procedures in the company of "we" that is carrying out the work. The procedure shows what to do. The author, checker and authoriser, who are part of the relevant "we" company, are the individuals that can answer "why", as they will have a helicopter view as to what would happen over time should the rest of the "we" in the company not do what it says in the maintenance procedure documents.

So go and ask "them" instead.
