MDMT and Impact Test in A36/6mm Storage Tank

10/27/2013 1:22 PM

Hi everybody!
There is a Storage Tank for water and they are asking me for the MDMT, but i dont know how to read the Table 4.1 in API650. They want to know this info for determinate Impact Testing is required or not?

Fluid: Water (6°C Aprox)
Min. Air T°: 0°C
Max Pressure of Vessel: 3 PSI(storage tank)
Material: A36- th=6mm

So.... is required impact test in this case? What is the correct way to read the table from API650 4.1? Whay about the equations 4.3?

Please I need your help. Thanks!!

How about quoting the relevant sections of API650, so that the rest of us can read them?

Are you sure that table 4.1 discuss about MDMT and thickness? Which edition of API 650 is your reference? If possible could you attach that table here for a deeep analysis?

Yes, in other edition of API650 the table is 2.1 (Minimum Permissible Design Metal Temperature for Materials Used in Tank Shells Without Impact Testing)

my question is 1.how can I stimate the MDMT for that conditions on the storage tank? (air tempreature 0ªC, and water=6ªC)
2. For that conditions is necessary impact test?

According to your data, the lowest temperature to which the tank would be exposed is 0°. The code may require some "cushion" such as a designated MDMT of somewhat less, such as -10°C. Then the table(s) should tell if impact testing is required.
