Diesel Powered Rockets For Satellite Launch

10/30/2013 4:51 AM

I want to send couple of satellites to space by diesel engine powered rocket engine. I have gathered plenty of information from various DIY sites. I would like to know the opinion of Engineers.

Thanks

Last I heard there is not many private persons that succeded in sending anything to space.

There is also certain countries (names withheld) that had trouble and would be pleased to have your diesel powered space technology!

Be prepared to spend a lot of money yet also to fail in the first attempts.

Please quote some DIY sites you so we know what you know or otherwise troll away!

The easiest way is to hitch a lift on someone else's rocket.

Here's a petrol/gasoline-powered vehicle:

Very interesting idea. What for do you use the diesel engine ? Its exhaust gas for the jet or for other functions as turning a propeller or a pump ?

Something like this, perhaps?

Kerosene (paraffin in the UK) has a long history of use as a rocket propellant. Is there any particular reason you want to use diesel instead? Why did so many previous rocket designers use kerosene, not diesel?
Seems like there would be some 're-inventing of the wheel' to use diesel.

He just needs to fit it with a turbo boost.

That would mean there is no return ticket from the moon due to the sheer weight of the thing. And we were so close!

Bugger!

So you think he wants to run the diesel engine on gasoline? Use the diesel engine to cool a kerosine rocket? Produce electricity with diesel engine to light the lights? Please re-read the OP.

Add a catalyst and a match and I am sure you'll get to heaven with a slight smell of diesel.

The Dragon is powered by 9 kerosene fuel engines.

I would contact these guys they have been the most successful of the private launch contractors. Plus they use your fuel of choice.

Just keep in mind Peterbuilt makes trucks not rockets for a reason.

Thanks John, Was making a point about the fuel in question and taking a short cut around explaining why diesel is not suitable. Just giving the OP a little credit for intelligence and the ability to find answers for themselves without bashing them.

I have the feeling that only a few realy read the question. The OP mentioned diesel engine not diesel fuel. Number "6" already did not read or may be I am wrong they read but not understand.

I am deeply surprised how low the communication runs lately.

I will hazard a guess that most responders considered the "diesel engine " to mean "diesel powered engine" but only the OP can reveal what he truly meant to say. I read the post literally. I agree that we are all guilty form time to time with reading between the lines and presuming that the posts we read are not always conveying the intended meaning. Language issues have caused and will cause problems, I remember an old test where the opening statement on the page was "Sign your name and hand in". Only 2 or 3 of the papers were properly done. Complete pass or fail in one line. If the OP was truly able to get anywhere near a functioning vehicle he would not be posting here, this is all speculation, IMHO.

Robert H. Goddard 1926 - gasoline powered rocket engine.

NASA - 2008 - conducting research into replacing fleet of disposable boosters with rockets using solid wax alpha olefin C30+ as fuel. interesting

Dr. Peter Plichta of Germany - research into silanes as rocket/turbine fuels.

Even more efficient as the silanes consume both oxygen and nitrogen, making one unit of air about three times as useful as oxidant.

Diesel powered sky rockets .... hmmm ... you would think today (Nov 5) is Guy Fawkes Day to celebrate the possibilities.

Don: you really cannot argue with Space X - since no one can hear your scream LOL.

Are you gents about to launch Guy Fawkes to the moon today? I thought you merely crispy crittered him every year, or draw and quarter, or that rot.

BTW - Space X uses 27 Merlin (rocket) engines on the dragon - the most powerful launch vehicle available in 2013. I think I should like to go to work for them (even as a janitor) after I retire from this job. Maybe I could be the first janitor on Mars.

I am a great supporter of Space X, even from the southern hemisphere.

Guy Fawkes is now only known in Australia by the oldies. Effectively cracker night was banned some 25 years ago, so now there is only a faint scent in the air. Oh there are still the handful of spectacular shows, but they are done by the specialists, not the "let's blow up the neighbour's letterbox brigade". I think it is only the UK where Guy Fawkes is celebrated these days.

As expected, there's been no reponse from the AP. They shouldn't be allowed to post a thread.
