What is Power System Stability Study?

11/06/2013 12:16 AM

I was asked by the grid authority to submit a Power System Stability Study before our 15mW ( 11kV) power plant is hook to local grid. The existing local grid ( Mainly 33, 66 and 123kV) capacity is around 200mW with mainly supported with 40mW gas turbine 10mWx2 Cogen Plant and the rest are 1 to 4 mW diesel gensets. I could not get any contact to complete the above report. 1) Can anyone pls beam me what is the scope of the above report? 2) Any company in South East Asia are competent to analyse , prepare tender scope and produce report until the final approval?

Please do not make the same mistake when communicating with the authorities:

-you say it is mW (Milli watt) but you most likely talking about MW (Mega watt) here which is order of magnitude higher.

It seems little but it will make all the difference if one or the other plant size falls on your head!

Good luck with the analyses.

I am very sorry . Yes you are right indeed it is Mega Watt

Dear sir

Power system stability study ,in your case will be behaviour of the grid when ever your power source gets synchronised with grid, what will be the disturbance of voltage and frequency of the system. If the disturbance is felt ,what is the extent and will it affect the stability of the system.Similalrly if your power source gets isolated from the grid, what are the effects ?

Once your power source is synchronised with Grid and if there is external disturbance in the system how your power source will behave?

You have to furnish lot of information about your power source and of the grid for a study to be made and submit detailed report.

These studies are made with dedicated software.

We can do such assignments for a fee.

It's an excellent topic for an internet search engine to get stuck into, that's for sure.

I believe Siemens Energy has an engineering services group that does this type of study. You can try to contact your regional Siemens office. Other major manufacturers of HV equipment (ABB, GE, Schneider) also may offer such services.

Great Peter. Thank you very much. Google could not get me any lead but Siemens would.

Now i have a good lead .

I will suggest to contact Multinationals in the beginning as EPC contractor. Introducing these firms at this stage will rip off the customer.

I experienced a case where one of Multinational listed in your message ( I shall not name) supplied 1 MW STATCON (static capacitor inductor) to a steel mill in Northern India having its own 9 MW of Captive HFO diesel power plant.

I was asked to assist in solving problem by supplier of HFO units as the Investor was not making payment. Reason being that if mills were run on Grid + Captive, the Grid will trip on over voltage and then the Captive Power Plant on Under voltage. And if alone on Captive Power, the HFO plant will trip on Under Voltage.

In the meeting representatives of multinational firm, HFO plant supplier and Customer was present.

Expert of Multinational (foreigner) was commented on dynamics of HFO, Governor and AVR of DG Sets not suitable.

I asked the Software designer to open logic on his PLC of Load Sharing between the two HFO units. Next I asked him to make some changes in kVAR sharing and voltage set points and next start the Power Plant and then load with mill - to surprise of all, the set up worked perfectly without any tripping. (AND WHEN I CAME OUT OF CONTROL ROOM TO MEETING ROOM, THE REPRESENTATIVES OF MULTINATIONAL HAD ALREADY PACKED UP THEIR BRIEF CASES AND VANISHED), reason being, I found that inherent problem in STATCON causing tripping of Grid.

Therefore please involve multinational with caution at late stage. There are many consulting firms available, locally to your town/State in India to do this study for you. The Stability study will involve:

1. Spinning reserves required in your power plant to take care of:

1.1 Momentary overload in the grid before your df/dt isolates your plant.

1.2 Transient change in frequency and voltage during start or tripping of any bulk load so that the frequency does not dip to stage where it can cause resonance in blades of steam turbine/ gas turbine running on grid.

2. Co-ordination of Electrical Protection of your system with others in grid.
