12/11/2013 2:22 AM

Hi,

I have a welding issue in high carbon steel sheet. carbon % is 0.6.

Pl suggest the welding rod & procedure for the same.

What is the issue and what did your basic research come up with?

(Google: "welding rod & procedure for high carbon steel sheet" )

Sounds more like a knowledge issue.

What does your welding technician/engineer/consultant/person have to say about this issue?

As suggested, where have your searched, so far?

Yes that diffintely is a problem.....

Did you try using duct tape instead?...

Seriously, you need to have more information for us to go on.

Could you explain your problem bit more?

1. What is your material specification such as ASTM, ASME ,AISI, SAE, EN, JIS, IS, AS etc.

2. you are interested in Solid state welding or Fusion welding?

welding ANY High carbon steel is fraught with problems. you have to pre-heat it, you have to weld it while hot, you have to then immediately put it in the heat treating furnace while STILL hot in order to normalize it, then heat treat it back to whatever hardness you desire. and you still have a high failure rate because you cannot inspect the welds until after heat treating is done. That is why from a practical standpoint it simply isn't done that much and considered "unweldable" by most people simply because they don't have the equipment and means to do the job. There are other ways to achieve high strength/hardness weldments that are more cost effective. FSW may be one possible means of welding high carbon steels, I'm no expert in that process but it can weld things even Electron Beam welding can't do. but it too has a high equipment cost. Typically if the carbon is above .3, don't bother trying to weld it unless you REALLY know what you are doing and have a heat treating furnace on site.

You need to know the complete analysis of the material being welded and then find a weld preheat calculator-probably can find one on line somewhere- to see what you need for preheat temperature and possible post weld heat as well. AS for the type of rod a low hydrogen one will suffice as long as you choose one where the rod base metal is a higher yield strength than the material you are welding.

1.The high carbon steel with 0.6 % carbon should be preheated to min. of 300 to 350deg. C for its through thickness if possible.

2.Use ASME SFA 5.4 E 312 type SS Electrode for welding the job. You can select any brand of electrode with above classification.

3.Maintain an inter pass temp. of min. 250 deg. C.

4. You can avoid post weld heat treatment as the electrode gives much higher UTS values and also an elongation of 35 to 40%.

5. Use of E312 type consumable will help to produce a crack free weld in difficult to weld material as well as in high carbon steel.
