Steel Rolling Practice

12/10/2013 1:25 PM

I started working as a Rolling Mills Engineer at the entry level and I need some help from experienced people in that field about:

  • Suggestions for some literature, websites I can use to enhance my knowledge about rolling mills real practice (especially about steel section mills).
  • Some guiding general tips for a rolling mills engineer

Why not ask some of the experienced "engineers" at your new plant.

Most importantly, they will know where you are, as in what country, etc.

They will also know the equipment, its age, its condition, its maintenance history, its capabilities, and most importantly they know something about you, your level of competence, your level of intelligence, your level of education, your ability to learn from something other than a anonymous forum who knows nothing about the plant, the equipment, nor you!

It seems more and more common for people to somehow get positions for which they have no qualifications. How do you do it?

Please describe the actions taken so far to find out the desired information, so that those may be deleted from the list of possibilities.

Hey, you got Lyn to do some leg work for you. What are you complaining about?

His advice, though he grumbled a bit about having to do it, he actually DID it.

So relax, its not personal. He just believes that if he (or one of his friends) ends up working beside you, you should be able to bring a lot to the game. As do I. I think your desire to know more is laudable, but I also agree that studying the available literature in house is preferable to asking an internet forum. Once you have exhausted all the owners manuals, (and the owners manuals of ALL the replacement components like motors, pumps and cranes), and got all the "old hands" to give up all their stories and anecdotes on how they solved problems in the past, only THEN should you try CR4 for general information about your job.

Regards...

On behalf of a few persons who could learn to temper the wind to the shorn lamb, I apologize. Your question is quite reasonable, so do not be discouraged. I'm not a steel guy myself, so I don't know of obvious recommendations. A Google search on "rolling mill practices" will likely turn up some good reading, including Lyn's results.

Please ignore if you have found some answers offending. As for as your question I would like to suggest you as under:-

1. There are many machines which are required to produce steel, such as Electric Arc Furnace, Ladels to carry molten metal, EOT Cranes, Furnaces for heating blooms, Rolling mills, etc.

2. Please go to googles and search for above machines etc.

3. Study the details of these machines, you may learn a lot from mfrs. web sites.

4. Study machines in your plant by referring their instruction manuals.

If you need any help for Cranes I can help you.
