33 KV/ 110 V Solar Power Station Question

12/11/2013 8:56 AM

Sir, In our Solar power station, The Potential transformers are failing ( damaging/ blasting) frequently. Can you suggest the cause of failure.

Actually many causes; unfused/unprotected PTs, overvoltage from output of inverters, total lack of coordination of PV array output with inverter control/protection circuitry (or lack thereof), etc. A total review of the electrical systems is required to remediate the situation and prevent future recurrences.

Some combination of:

  • Incorrect specification
  • Incorrect construction
  • Incorrect operation
  • Incorrect maintenance

Without reviewing the design, construction, operation and maintenance documents it is difficult to say more.

Is your self destructing power station located in a country that has any code, safety, insurance coverage or other controls on how the station was constructed and does it have any restrictions or requirements on the qualifications for those presently operating the station?

Improper grounding....

I would review the system as a whole for spec guidelines....The inverter(s) and transformer relationship together with proper wire size and grounding requirements, can be challenging....The environmental conditions can also be a contributing factor....Proper maintenance is also important...

I'd say that sums it up, in a word!

No one can answer your question - you are not providing sufficient information. You MUST at least provide a single line diagram of what it is you have and how it is connected. . . . Short - NO diagram - NO comment.

Overvoltage that exceeds the PT design rating/limitations.

You don't even state what the Potential transformers are monitoring. Whether they are protected against transients (lightning or static) Too big a question, not enough details.

The Potential transformers are failing ( damaging/ blasting) frequently

What, are you making insulators out of C4?

As per a previous recent question on CR4 it sounds like it could be over voltage events. Best you get someone in to diagnose and fix the problem.
