CSA = Canadian Standards Association, and is analogous to UL in the U.S. You might not need both.

if you want to get paid you need to live up to what you contracted to do, if you agreed to produce a certificate from either body the answer is yes. your contract aupercedes all. if you just now see a conflict in what you agreed to deliver you need to contact your customer and get the issue straight with them.

If the device was tested for either of the two market US or Canada it will be marked. The CSA could have a C or a US after them or both. Same with the UL. There could also be other labs the device was tested under like ETL. You may not have to have it UL tested if the device was tested by CSA under standards for the US market.

Then again you say that the project is in Canada. The specs say they need to be CSA. Why you worried about UL.

Your project specifications are the governing document and even supercede the drawings..at least here in the US. If there is a third party commissioning agency invloved they will check all those details. Possible requirement for the casualty underwriter. Just curious, for my knowlwedge, why is this a concern for you? Is one more readily available than the other or does it exceed your budget or what? Sometimes projects allow for substitutions if the information is supplied and approved before a project bid/award.

Insurance Underwriters will generally determine which certification is required and manufacturers will get both approvals for their product when they sell in both markets.

Subrahmanian,

I suspect that the answer comes in three parts. As others have said, the project's documents will govern. In Canada, U/L is not the proper listing but C-U/L (Canadian U/L) would be OK, or CSA.

Beyond these two parts is the part that is based on the relevant code documents. I don't know which code documents govern in your project's jurisdiction, but an example I can give you is that the NEC in the USA will require the use of listed components any time they are available, so non-listed components cannot be used (a good example is "extraflex" liquid-tite conduit, which is not listed and therefore cannot be used--even though a lot is sold and installed).

Based on this third part, my answer is that even if the project does not require the certification, it would be required if the applicable code documents require it.
