Twist On Solar Power

01/22/2014 8:12 AM

In reading this morning I came across the results of some experimenting being done at MIT that really captured my attention. In short, using nano technology they have demonstrated in lab tests (not commercially available yet) that a solar collector can be designed to capture solar energy and then store that energy as heat until that energy can be used "on demand" to then produce electricity.Tthe implications here are quite exciting. Here's a link to some of that information http://www.gizmag.com/solar-power-nanoscale-thermophotovoltaic-system/30528/?utm_source=Gizmag+Subscribers&utm_campaign=f4566917a2-UA-2235360-4&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_65b67362bd-f4566917a2-90360106

Here's the link. It sounds good, but it also sounds like they have a lot of work to do to make it practical.

I see a lot of links on here that aren't in linkable form. In Firefox, once you cut and paste the link, you have to highlight it in the message box, and click the link button up top. Sometimes you also have to paste the link inside the link connection.

Just thought I'd mention that.

good job. sometimes when multitasking I over hurry, I'm just trying to impart information I think others might have an interest in although still in the lab phase It looks like when sca;ed up it has great promise to store energy without the traditional approach of using a battery as well as a collector, if simplified the applications here are obvious

If we can get the storage issues solved, everything will be looking better.

I really think the day will come that we'll overcome the storage dilemma. Even regular batteries keep getting better.

One way to bypass the battery in a solar system is a 'smart' double sided vertical bi-metal strip (that would look like a traffic sign on the side of the road) that bends towards the sun after dawn, tracks the sun in cycles during the day and then after sunset bends back to the vertical.

The heat generated mechanical movement is converted to electricity/water pumping etc. I'm not saying that it is efficienct, but you can fire a bullet through the structure and it should keep working.

As with many things in this world, it seemingly makes great target practice for gun owners!!!!

How many tons of nano tubes will be needed on top of each panels to store a few hours worth of energy?

Don't get too excited.

It is not because it seems to work that it is viable...

I am slightly confused about the efficiencies of solar devices being researched, when the most efficient seems to be 'heat pumps' which can transfer 3 to 7 times as much energy as they use. Why not use a heat engine to run the heat pump and a generator to salvage the excess in the form of electricity?
