3.3KV 450 KW Motor Soft Starter Demand

01/29/2014 4:29 AM

Hello credible CR4 Engineers, Sirs, I am located in "Nigeria". I am posed with the issue of locating the nearest Soft starter (VFD) capable of limiting the starting current of a 3 phase electric motor with a 450KW capacity. My priority is availability, proximity, durability and cost. Any useful pointer will be highly appreciated. Cheers

Internet search engines, the local Yellow Pages and local trade directories are three possible sources of information. Also, search Globalspec, Alibaba, etc. (usual disclaimer). Do it by telephone wherever possible; it's far faster than the internet as one is talking with a real human being with an interest in negotiating a sale, and sales office telephones are programmed so that the next available individual can pick up the call. Failing that, fax, so that anyone at the other end can pick up the ball and run with it.

Good luck.

Soft starters and VFDs are NOT the same thing, and the cost dirrence is a factor of 10 in most cases (VFD = Soft Starters x 10). You need to decide ahead of time which one you want. If there is no need to vary the speed, you likely do not need a VFD. But a soft starter cannot accelerate the motor with less than 200% of motor nameplate FLA if completely unloaded, usually much more. So if you have a severely limited available power source or some other restriction on starting kVA, then a soft starter may not work and it MUST be a VFD.

There are also several mfrs of MV soft starters who do NOT offer MV VFDs. Even among those that can provide both, the products are so different that they often have separate sales and support groups. So decide WHAT you want / need first, then pursue suppliers with LOCAL representation in Nigeria or other nearby environs.

Hi ,

First of all please decide , if you don't want speed control ...

IF you need Soft starters only to limit starting current Please consult...

You will get a better solution , starting current less than 1.5IFL.With special arrangement.

Hope this is use full to you .

If the motor need to be operated on constant speed, only soft starter is required. Look for a soft starter with built in by pass contractor. This helps you durability, and power save, because when the motor attains its full speed, the circuit switch over to the by pass contractor saving heat dissipation in the soft start and the power for ventilation inside the soft starter panel/box. also increases life of SCR and fan.

I am unaware of any MV soft starter manufacturer who does not automatically include a Bypass Contactor in their design. Without that the heat sinks would need to be enormous and the introduction of dust and moisture into an MV soft starter box via vents could be catastrophic.
