Well, that depends upon what is in the pipe and its temperature. Have these data available when discussing the requirements with the local piping components distributor, and the problem will be solved.

Great! All the information the piping components distributor needs to be able to advise is now to hand. The answer can now be determined by telephone; make the call.

Something is wrong here. Shouldn't you already know this?

Did you get your CSWIP 3.1 welding inspector certification on the internet, too?

Where is this ill fated pipeline located?

That explains it.

They only pump oil in the KSA.

There are many suitable gaskets. Almost any gasket will work in the water environment you are describing. Google "gasket compatibility" There are many sites listed there. One very good one is:

Cut apart an old inner tube. one or two layers should do it.

Yusef1-

Rubber gaskets work well while they are in service but changing them is an arduous task. They tend to adhere to the flange faces which must be cleaned/scraped when being changed. They also tend to break apart and stick to the faces of the flanges.

Removal and replacement usually consists of having to removing the bolts, obtaining full access to the faces of each flange, scraping the rubber off the flanges, wire brushing to remove small particles of rubber and perhaps having to use a liquid rubber remover, If it is a full face gasket that doubles the amount of rubber to be removed and the bolt holes are more difficult to scrape/work around. If the new gasket is a half face one the bolts on an arc of half the bolts plus one are loosely installed and the new half face gasket dropped in between the faces. Removal though requires the complete access to the face of each flange. They require much more labor than other gasket materials.

If a non-sticking gasket material such as a compressed non-asbestos gasket is used there is no residue on the flange faces. This requires only minimal, if any, scraping which can usually be done by simply separating the flange faces a few inches with banana wedges and minimal scraping from the sides. A sample of this would be the Garlock style 2900, an Aramid fibers with nitrile binders gasket.

On the other end of the choice spectrum is a half face Teflon envelope gasket. This would be the easiest to remove and install. It would also be the most expensive material cost. Labor costs would be lower so it likely would be the cheapest to use. Installation and removal of a half face is simple with the half bolts out/half bolts in method

Overall, the old rubber tubes would seal but for changing them they would probably be the worst choice.

Good Luck, Old Salt
