Bubble Appears After Steel Cord Belt Splice

02/21/2014 10:04 PM

Hi there,

After a recent re-splice on our Steel cord belt, we observed a bubble appears. The belt dimensions are 1800mm width, ST2500.

Any idea if it's common to observe a bubble after the splice or how critical it can be??

Well,

With so much information, I am overwhelmed.

It will take a long time to digest the copious amounts of information you provided on the details of the repair.

I'm being cynical because we don't read minds and we don't have x-ray vision.

Redfred - I would assume that the rubber would form the bubble because steel would need to be about 1500 degrees before a bubble could form in it, so I think we can safely assume that he is referring to a bubble in the rubber

X ray vision systems may be useful in locating the steel "cords"

I thought a steel cord was called a cable. For a bubble to form in steel you've got to get really hot.

It's much easier to get bubbles in the rubber overlay.

They're called voids. Air inclusions. A sign of poor processing.

Just thought that I'd have some fun obfuscating the microscopic information we did get.

You'd better copyright that phrase, or else I'm gonna steal it!

Is it a bubble, or a "wave" that does not lie flat near or at the splice?

If it is a wave, the problem is that the belt splice was not cut squarely on both ends,or

not parallel when cut or spliced. This will result in one end of the splice being

longer than the other, causing a wave to form on the longer of the two cuts. The longer

cut is being forced into a shorter space. Both cuts should be exactly the same length

across the width, whether diagonal or straight. If not adjust the angle accordingly.

An effective method is to make one cut, then overlap it onto the belt at the next cut,

and trace the first cut onto the belt.Make the second cut on this line, and variations

will be eliminated or minimized.Place both cut ends together before splicing and

examine for irregularities, and correct if necessary.

A diagonal cut is preferred to a straight cut because it gives a smoother transition over the rollers, and a longer splice line is stronger.

Good luck.

It will also depend on why the splice was used on this belt in the first place. If this splice is there to repair a belt failure then the steel weave maybe compromised near but not at the site of the tear. I believe the steel cords can snap much like why dried spaghetti breaks at multiple places when fractured.

Once again we know virtually nothing about this problem. The most obvious, critical mysteries to me are why a splice is being used in the first place, how new is this belt and what is the job of this belt?

I also had a bubble at the belt splice of my tire on my go cart. I just filled the tire with concrete, and then groung the bubble off. Good as new.

There's no bubble in the CR4 pet crystal ball. Sadly, it's at the mender's at the moment.

What did the belt's original manufacturer say during the tellephone call?
