When To Use NAMUR Standard In A Switch?

03/03/2014 3:22 AM

Good day! I'm currently working on a float switch data sheet. Our project requires NAMUR output for switch but the vendor cannot provide it. But as per vendor product data sheet, their float switch have an approval for explosion protection. Is it ok if the switch does not have a NAMUR output? Thanks!

If your project requires NAMUR output (i.e. if it's written into a contract), then NAMUR you must provide.

Normally NAMUR switches are two-wire switches which are mainly used in explosive areas. They normally produce very low current out put, that is in either <1 mA or >2.2

They are mostly preferred in places we need intrinsic safety, where in these switches/Sensors will be connected to plc/DCS via barriers.

If you are going to use NAMUR output ensure that you have an amplifier or input that is specifically designed for low level switching current. Most of the DCS /PLC can handle NAMUR inputs , but still check with vendor if you need amplifier.

Now whether NAMUR is required or not , you need to check with your client. Is it only required for this particular switch or for all instruments that are located in hazardous area?
