What rails are you talking about!

Light rails, train rails, crane rails?

Most likely: Steel! But you need to come out of the closet to know for sure!

tiny history lesson, back around the California gold rush and civil wars railroads were enjoying increasing popularity. one factor that limited their growth was the soft iron used to make rails. Andrew Carnegie of Pittsburgh had heard of a process being used by a Brit to better the qualities of iron. he went across the pond and came back then built the largest blast furnace in its day. the steel he produced revolutionized the railroad industry and made him the richest man in the world when JP Morgan bought him out.

Fredski-

Also an extra bit of a little history-

The earliest rails were made of wood, but these wore out quickly. Hardwood such as Jarrah and Karri were better than softwoods such as Fir. Longitudinal sleepers are topped with iron or steel rails that are lighter than they then might otherwise be because of the support of the sleepers.

On October 8, 1845, the Montour Iron Works of Danville rolled the first iron T-rails in Pennsylvania, and perhaps the United States. Prior to that strap iron rails were used. These failed after only a few trains passed over them

Just a little additional history.

Good Luck, Old Salt

Pearlitic Steels are generally used. However, based on terrain and weather condition chemical composition of rails may be changed to suit the operating condition.
